What Is the Pinhole Technique ?

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) is a patented, scalpel-free procedure for treating gum recession. Instead of cutting and suturing, the clinician uses a specially designed instrument through a small pinhole to gently loosen and reposition gum tissue over the exposed root surfaces.

The result is immediate coverage of receded gums — without the extended healing time associated with traditional gum grafting. Multiple teeth can be treated in a single appointment.

  • No incisions — a single pinhole entry point is used
  • No sutures — no post-operative stitches to remove
  • Significantly less bleeding and discomfort than grafting
  • Much shorter procedure time
  • Multiple teeth treated in one appointment
  • Immediate visible improvement to the gumline

Pinhole vs. Traditional Gum Grafting

FGG

Free Gingival Graft
Gum Tissue Reinforcement

For areas with insufficient gum tissue, a small section of tissue is taken from the palate and grafted to the deficient zone — strengthening the gumline and creating a durable, keratinised band of tissue around teeth or implants.

  • Builds thicker, healthier gum tissue
  • Protects teeth & implants long-term
  • Ideal for thin gum biotype patients
  • Commonly combined with implant placement
CTG

Connective Tissue Graft
Gum Recession Treatment

For recession where the root is exposed, connective tissue harvested from beneath the palate is grafted over the affected area — covering the root surface, thickening the gum, and achieving natural-looking results with minimal visible scarring.

  • Covers exposed root surfaces
  • Reduces sensitivity from recession
  • Thickens gum for long-term protection
  • Gold standard for root coverage

Not sure which procedure is right for you? The appropriate gum surgery depends on the type and extent of recession, tissue thickness, and your aesthetic goals. Our specialist will assess your case in detail and recommend the most effective approach.

Pinhole Surgery Questions

What our international patients ask about the Pinhole gum technique.

Am I a candidate for Pinhole surgery?
Pinhole surgery is suitable for most patients with mild to moderate gum recession. The best way to determine candidacy is a clinical evaluation — we assess root surface condition, tissue thickness, and the extent of recession. Severe cases or those requiring significant tissue augmentation may be better served by traditional grafting.
How long is recovery after Pinhole gum surgery?
Recovery is significantly faster than traditional grafting. Most patients return to normal activities the next day. You may experience minor swelling and sensitivity for a few days. We recommend a soft diet for 1–2 weeks post-procedure.
How long do Pinhole results last?
Clinical studies show long-term stability comparable to traditional gum grafting. Results are most durable when combined with improved oral hygiene habits and addressing the root cause of recession (such as aggressive brushing technique or bite issues).
Is Pinhole surgery covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance plan. We can provide full documentation for international insurance claims. Contact our English-speaking staff with your insurance details and we'll help clarify what may be reimbursable.
